a strange dichotomy…
(If you didn’t read the first post, please do so…this is just kind of finishing up my thoughts from that…. )
(Don’t worry, this will be short!) I find it a little odd…the trend of young people these days. As kids/teenagers we couldn’t WAIT to get out from under our parents’ rule so we could be on our own, be independent, be US. And what’s happening these days? Left and right the younger generation (though not all of them) is blindly voting for things that are basically taking that power/control out of their hands and putting it into the hands of the government. Go to any secular (or even private) college and you get inundated with liberal philosophies that tell you the government can do a better job of managing your life than you can. (And I can say so, I’ve been to many colleges and have heard allllllllllll their “unbiased” opinions (*choke*).
Strange…what’s also strange to me are the terms “conservative” and “liberal.” They’re backwards. You see, I really AM a liberal. I’m not conservative at all. Why is it that liberals want MORE government….that’s not liberating at all to me. But yet conservatism is treated like it’s a gag over your mouth and a blindfold over your eyes…when really, the truth is, it’s the opposite. It really is folks. Conservatives (like me) believe that we don’t need the government to dictate every little aspect of our lives. Some things yes…like protecting human life…and keeping our country safe….but what lightbulbs to use? C’mon now! (that post will be coming soon and you won’t want to miss it!) Anyhow, it’s true…but yet like most things, neither conservatisim or liberalism is what it seems. I will show you how and why in the coming months.
But for now….I need to do some work-work…
well, here we go…
Yesterday morning I woke up with this insane drive to write…one pressing question was so heavily on my mind that I had to get it out. Fortunately my sweet hubby took care of the kiddos so I could get it out. At any rate, people have been telling me to write a blog on this for some time (because I’m so passionate about politics and the goings-on in our nation) and so here it is….hope you enjoy the ride and please have patience with me. I’m very passionate and if there is anything I love, it is this most amazing, wonderful, blessed country that God has given us.
I welcome any and all questions and comments as long as they are kept clean and kind! So let’s talk…
Here’s what I had to get out of my system yesterday… (oh did I mention I made copies of this and gave it to people yesterday at church? Yeah…that’s how bad it was…tee hee…)
The number one complaint I hear from Christians when it comes to politics is that they generally do not want to talk about politics because most politicians, in their mind, are liars, only in it for themselves, and big fat phonies.
Which leads me to an interesting question…why then, do I hear of more and more Christians wanting to put more of them in power and give them more control over our lives? It concerns me a great deal the more I hear of Christians who are now leaning towards a socialist way of thinking because socialism puts more power in the very hands of these same people. Of anyone, as Christians we know that people are born sinful and we have evil desires and selfish hearts – it not only tells us that in the Bible, but we know it in our hearts, even more so once we’ve come to Christ. So WHY would we willingly vote to put more people in power over us to make decisions for us and tell us how to live our lives, when we’re striving to live by God’s Word? Why would we willingly vote to put people in power who profess to believe that people are basically good, which goes against God’s Word?
I think these Christians are erring on giving folks too much of the benefit of the doubt and buying into the cultural belief more or less (whether they acknowledge it or not) that people are basically good and will make the right decisions.
At least this is the only reason why I can barely grasp at why someone would vote for a government-power-hungry political candidate who has voted for more government control more than anyone else in the Senate. It’s because they believe that he will “do the right thing.”
Hmmm…..the right thing. The right thing according to Christ? Obviously not…he (and I’m speaking of the ‘famed’ Barack Obama) voted in favor of (not just abortion) but partial birth abortion. Now I know some of you will say that a president does not have control over the abortion issue, and I will address that in a bit, but please…read on…
(Oh and a note on the partial birth abortion…I read a direct quote recently where he said that he knows that abortion is a difficult decision (this was in regards to partial birth abortion) but he trusts the mother to make that decision. Obviously he does not believe that people are basically evil and will do whatever is in their own selfish interests, regardless of another human being’s rights….
That’s just the tip of the iceberg folks. Check out his congressional record and I highly doubt any of you would truly think this guy represents what we as Christians hold dear. (Oh and you can check out his congressional record online…there’s all sorts of places that hold this information…)
He was the only Illinois State Senator to vote against a bill barring early release for (criminal) sex offenders.
He voted against filtering pornography on school and library computers.
He voted “present” on a bill to keep pornographic book and video stores and strip clubs from setting up within 1,000 feet of schools and churches.
Twice, Obama voted against bills prohibiting tax funding of abortions. (Do you want to vote for someone who thinks you should pay for other people’s abortions??!)
His wife, Michelle, sent out a fundraising letter, which actually stated her concern over the rise of conservatism in the Country, and that the ‘so-called’ partial-birth abortion was a legitimate medical procedure that should be protected.
In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA (Born Alive Infants Protection Act) was sent, Obama prevented it from even getting a hearing. BAIPA, by the way, stated that all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted.
He voted “present” on a bill to notify parents when their minor children seek an abortion.
He twice voted “present” on an Illinois partial-birth abortion ban.
Now….I know even some of you can probably overlook all these issues because you may be on the “anyone but Bush” bandwagon—to which, I have to say, I am deeply saddened and concerned that this would be the state of Christian thinking today, but I realize there are more issues than just these for which a person would vote for. And that is why this is just the beginning. Many of you have asked me for information on political matters and I’m giving it to you. (Aren’t you glad you asked?!)
I said I would address the issue on the presidential “lack of control” over the abortion issue…that statement (or thought) is simply not the point and completely irrelevant. What he does have control over is judicial nominees and they are the ones that legislate. So in effect, he DOES have some control…..let’s see….do you think Obama will nominate pro-life candidates for the Supreme Court? Heck no! The guy obviously believes (as per his voting record) that parents shouldn’t even be notified if their daughter has an abortion. Your kid can’t even get a Tylenol from a school nurse…but “surgery”??? (Actually, on a personal note I find it quite shocking that we have to enact laws to prevent things like partial birth abortion, but then that goes to show you that there are too many folks out there with bleeding heart syndrome for the wrong person…the pedophile, the person wanting the abortion, the criminal….etc. etc.) And hate it as you may, but they are the extreme left-wing liberals.
I truly pray that you will PRAY about this decision on Obama. I’m quite frankly stunned at the notion that so many Christians “love” Obama (and I’m not saying “love” in the Christian sense…) I’ve even heard that people think he’s a “wonderful Christian man” and to that, again, I say…would someone (supposedly Obama) who is a true believer of the Lord Jesus Christ REALLY be able to vote in the manner that he has? It is my firm belief that a person with a TRUE spiritual conversion and cleansing of the heart by the Holy Spirit would not be able to. I just don’t, and won’t ever, believe it. Now, again, I’m not saying these are the only issues of which there are to vote on…but in my mind they are crucial issues because devaluing human life in such a gross manner as he has done really shows the heart and integrity of a man.
On another note…I urge you to really think about why so many of you hate the word “conservative.” It’s increasingly surprising to me how Christians treat that word like the secular word treats the word “Christian”. I am not writing this to try and change your mind or to make you think a certain way, but as has been shown in many polls, a lot of Obama supporters when asked about what he has done that makes him such a great candidate have NO answer. Do you? Most people (I believe) have fallen into the “CHANGE!!” hype and rhetoric he is spouting, but have not an iota of an idea of what that means and what the effects are, economically (and even spiritually) for this nation. They can say “he’s for health care!!” but they have no clue what that means, what the problems are, what the ramifications are of his plan or anything…they just think they won’t have to pay for it. (Which is another topic altogether but a false notion just in case you were wondering.)
I’m not one to say that we have to vote for a Christian candidate. That’s not the point of this at all. (In fact, on another note I’m very disappointed in the candidate the Republican party has chosen.) But the point is to really think about who you are voting for and what they stand for. When it comes down to it, they don’t have to stand for every issue you do (that’s not practical or realistic) but if they are so diametrically OPPOSED to everything (or the most important things) you DO stand for, why would you vote for them? ? As Christians we are called to love people and treat them the way we are to be treated…why would we want to vote for someone who doesn’t even VALUE human life enough to make it illegal to kill one of them just coming into the world? I believe (this isn’t Biblical or anything, it’s just my personal belief) that we will be held accountable for the choices we make in regards to this country. God has blessed us in a way that we can’t even imagine, by being part of the greatest nation in the history of the world, and I believe He will hold us accountable for what we do with that! But again, that’s not Biblical, just my opinion.
Now don’t you all worry…there’s more to come. And I’m not going to bash any of you Obama supporters, really…though I think you’re a little off your rocker and somewhat (or a lot) deceived, I am not going to put you down or attack you personally. I have a passion for politics and trying to help educate people and that’s the point of all this. Oh–and I’m learning too, so if anyone has anything to point out where I’ve erred in something I’ve said, by all means, let me know. Amazingly, I’m not perfect.
And on that note…have a great day!
